Kitchener is a city about 100 Km west of Toronto. It was known as Berlin until a 1916 referendum changed its name. The city had a population of 256,885 at the time of the 2021 Canadian census.
Although they have separate municipal governments, Kitchener and Waterloo are considered “twin cities”, and are often referred to jointly as “Kitchener–Waterloo” or “KW” for short. Kitchener has a strong German heritage because of the high levels of settlement in this area by German-speaking immigrants. Kitchener–Waterloo’s Oktoberfest celebration is an annual nine-day event that started in 1969. Based on the original German Oktoberfest, it is billed as Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival. It is the largest Bavarian festival outside of Germany.
